Baxenden Power Cut
A small explosion this morning preceded a power cut in the villages of Baxenden
and Rising Bridge. A major supply cable into the site of Baxenden Chemicals was
at the centre of today’s drama.
An eyewitness said “There was a flash like lightning and a loud bang”. The
surrounding grassy area caught fire but was not serious and the fire
extinguished itself. Luckily no-one was in the near vicinity at the time so
there were no injuries from either the blast or from falling debris. Power was
lost at Baxenden Chemicals and Hollands Pies and also surrounding private
properties.
United Utilities were quick to restore power to local houses, and emergency
generators kicked in at the chemical plant and the food factory.
The cause of the explosion is as yet unkown and United Utilities are working to
establish the cause and also to restore supply to both plants.
